Escalating Violence in Manipur: Central Government Deploys Additional Paramilitary Forces
The situation in Manipur has taken a grim turn with a surge in violence, prompting the central government to take swift action. In response to recent incidents of bloodshed, the government dispatched ten additional companies of paramilitary forces to the state. Tensions remain high in various regions, leading to the imposition of curfews in Imphal East and West. The violent clashes have resulted in fatalities and destruction, demanding urgent measures to restore peace.

Central Government Bolsters Security
In a bid to quell the escalating violence, the central government has sent ten extra paramilitary companies to Manipur. Comprising five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) units, three Border Security Force (BSF) units, and one each of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), these reinforcements reached Manipur on Saturday evening.

Continued Bloodshed and Arson
Despite the deployment of security forces, the state continued to witness fresh incidents of violence, including armed confrontations between various groups and security personnel. An arrest of a Kuki independent army militant followed an encounter with the army, while instances of arson by mobs were reported in several areas, exacerbating the situation.

Robberies of Arms and Ammunition
Miscreants, both tribal and non-tribal, have gained access to a substantial cache of arms and ammunition stolen from police armouries since May 3. This has contributed to the ongoing incidents of firing and violence in the region. Authorities have been grappling with the aftermath of a robbery where the 2nd battalion of the India Reserve Battalion lost sophisticated arms and nearly 19,000 rounds of ammunition.

Gruesome Killings Fuel Unrest
The recent killings of three men from the Meitei community in Manipur's Kwakta area, with their bodies mutilated, and two men from the tribal Kuki community in the Churachandpur district have added to the turmoil. The motives behind these killings remain unclear, but they reflect the deep-rooted ethnic tensions that have plagued the state for months.

Ethnic Clashes: A Prolonged Crisis
Since May 3, Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic clashes, primarily involving the tribal Kuki and the majority Meitei communities. The clashes were triggered by protests against proposed changes to the state's reservation matrix, granting scheduled tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community. The violence has led to the displacement of over 50,000 people and resulted in more than 160 confirmed deaths.

A Turbulent Week and Uncertain Future
The situation in Manipur worsened with the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum's announcement of a mass burial for 35 victims of the ethnic violence. The burial plan faced opposition from the Meitei community, leading to widespread clashes and the tragic death of a Manipur police constable. The state's ethnic fault lines have further deepened, causing immense suffering and fear among the residents.
